Max and the Tuna Can

Max the gray cat loved his boy Zach. They did everything together! They ate together, played together, and slept together. When Zach had to go to school, they even did that together. The mean bus driver wouldn’t let Max ride the bus so they just left a little bit early and walked.
On those rare days when they got all their chores done and left extra-early, they would allow themselves some mischief. They would take little detours and imagined themselves great Explorers! And so it was on this day. They stopped at the corner and looked at each other, their eyes twinkling. Without a word they took a right instead of their usual left. They had never gone down this road because Zach’s Mom said they were Not Allowed. They had heard many mysterious stories about the old deserted house at the end of the street. Some even say it was haunted!
As they approached the big old house they were laughing and trying to make each other scairty when they heard a can opener. The smell of tuna wafted through the wind flowing through the broken windows of the haunted house. Max began to drool, because he had eaten only a light breakfast on account of Zach wanting to leave so early in the morning.
Max bolted towards the haunted house. His mad desire for tuna was his one unsated desire.
Zach yelled and called for Max. “No! No, Max!!!! We’re Not Allowed!!” Come on Max, we will just go to the window and look in.
Reluctantly, Max followed. There was an eerie moaning in the overgrown bushes near the creepy looking house. Max put his paw out to stop Zach from going any further, but Max was too curious. Max flew through a broken window, landing in the library of the haunted mansion!
There, seated in a leather back chair, was a strange looking old woman surrounded by the strangest cats they had ever seen. She was holding an opened tin of tuna. “Come in my friends” she cackled, “Come and see what I have here.
Both Max and Zach thought it was strange that none of the other cats were interested in the tuna, but they felt themselves being drawn into the room, as thought they were under a spell. Something didn’t feel right to Zach. Max was reaching for the tuna that the woman had placed on a black saucer when one of the strange cats spoke. He said, “Think twice about eating that tuna Max, it will change the way you feel.”
Now Max was intrigued. But Zach was terribly worried.
“No, Max, don’t eat it”, Zach hurriedly said. But it was too late because Max had reached the tuna on the plate and had dug in. With his first bite he suddenly felt powerful, like he could do anything! The more tuna he ate the more powerful he felt. And then he realized he could do something he had often longed to do. He could actually talk to Zach!
He said, “Zach you should eat some of this tuna, it will give you magic powers”.
Zach was very surprised to hear Max speak! He reached for the tuna and just as he was about to take a taste he stopped and thought, “I do not really like tuna for breakfast. I will leave the rest for Max.”
So Max kept eating and eating and eating until the tuna was all gone. The more tuna Max ate, the stranger he felt! Not only could he speak to Zach, he could understand him, too!
Max said to Zach,”Who is this strange woman that lives here?” And with that, Max jumped onto the chair where the old woman was sitting.
The old woman reached out and gave Max a scritch and said “Dear, sweet Max. We wanted you to have all this power so you could save the house from being destroyed!! This house is special because it is the home of special and mystical cats! We live here and so do the spirits of all who have come before. It is important for us to have a safe place, but the bulldozers are supposed to be here today. I hope you can help us. Maybe if we use the haunted reputation of the house we can scare away the mean people with the bulldozers, so that all kitties may have this house to come to when they have nowhere else to go.
Max felt honored that he had been chosen. His eyes lit up and he purred his happiness as he turned to Zach and asked, “Will you help me keep the mean beans with the bulldozers away? We have to keep a safe house for kitties with no forever home; a home where the old woman can make lovely cakes and have as many cats as she wants, and where any abandoned cat can find shelter.
Zach told Max “Of course I will! I am just as determined to help the old woman keep her home and the cat sanctuary as you are. But what can we do?”
Zach suddenly got an idea. “I will gather all my friends to come over to stop the beans in bulldozers,” he said. Immediately, Zach and Max rushed out of the house. They ran all over the neighborhood, gathering up friends by the bushels. Not just cat friends either, dog friends, horse friends, butterfly friends, there was even a pair of vishus deer, but they were just babies.
Zach and Max began telling all of the furry creatures and beans about the special house and the plan for destroying it. “We must do something to keep this sanctuary safe.”
All of a sudden, one of the cat friends, Pearl, said “We need to put a spell on the grounds so everyone that comes into the yard will turn into a kitty cat for 24 hours. Then they won’t want to destroy our house! We need the spell from the witches for the tuna spell, so that the beans will understand cat language, and be able to speak it. Then we can make them see what this house means to us.”
“Who will go get the witches?” Zach said. “They all are friends with vishus deer!
Zach, who was not under the tuna spell, started shouting: “Mao! Rocky! It’s a trap! We need you and your vishus deer repellunt! Please help or the vishus deer will eat all the poor homeless kitties who come here for shelter! Please, Please! Mao! Rocky!”
Zach waited for a response, but heard nothing until at long last he saw the old woman pushing a large grocery cart full of vishus deer repellunt! “No, it’s not a trap, but we should protect ourselves. Here! Everybody grab a can of vishus deer repellunt.”

While everyone was distracted by grabbing their vishus deer repellunt, the bulldozers pulled up in front of the house. Max saw them and decided that before the tuna spell wore off and while he was still strong and powerful, and could speak to the humans that he should be the one to confront them. Max never got past the door. The old woman was waiting on the porch for him. “Wait, Max”, she said. “I’ll go with you.”
Max and the strange old woman walked toward the bulldozer men. Max said to the old woman, “I wish the tuna spell could make the house invisible and then the cat sanctuary would be safe forever.”
The bulldozer men got out of the bulldozer. One of them was holding a clipboard and was scratching his head. He looked at the other man and said, “OK, what practical joker gave us the address of a vacant lot? Do they think we haven’t got better things to do today? Come on. Let’s get to the next job.” And just like that the bulldozer men got back into the bulldozer and drove away!
Max looked at the old woman, who was now looking stranger than ever! She said, “Dear, sweet Max, I knew you were the right cat for the job!”
Max looked at her and said, “But I don’t understand. All I did was wish for the house to be invisible.”
The strange old woman scritched Max’s head and smiled. “So you did, Max. So you did! But I couldn’t tell you what to do. You see, when your motives are pure and good, the tuna spell will grant your heart’s desire. That’s why you were able to speak with Zack, you love him. Then when you put the needs of your friends and all those who came before above your own, your wish for invisibility was granted. You wished it just in time, too! The spell wore off one minute after you made your wish, at daybreak! Well done, Max!
Now, it’s off to school for you and Zack. You don’t want to be late!”

Great story. The vishus deer and witch connection explains a lot of the vishus deer sightings.
