Ferguson and the Mouse Hole

with 18 comments

Ferguson curled up on his favorite rug, strategically located by the mouse hole of his Arch Nemesis, Mortimer Mouse!

Mortimer Mouse had been a formidable opponent for much too long! Until Ferguson moved to this new house and found Mortimer he could never have imagined that mice could be so sneaky, so ingenious or so speedy! Ferguson had to figure out a way to catch Mortimer, once and for all.

Ferguson was working on a new plan when he heard the unmistakable squeaky voice of Mortimer saying “You know, cats are much smarter than mice, I know you will come up with a plan to catch me. Ferguson ears perked up; he was intrigued, but confused, not realizing that Mortimer had his sneaky mouse fingers crossed behind his back.

“Yes, one of these days… I won’t expect it, you’ll catch me, and that will be the end of Mortimer!” the mouse said as he walked to his mouse hole. Of course, he had a plan. Mortimer believed all animals could live together in peace, so he planned to make friends with Ferguson. Of course first he had to convince Ferguson not to capture him and have him as dinner! He had started working on his plan to convert as soon as Ferguson had moved into the house.

But, Ferguson had other ideas. He felt that mice were never meant to be trusted. But Mortimer had a family that Ferguson knew depended on Mortimer to provide food for them. Ferguson was so conflicted. What to do, what to do?

Finally, Ferguson decided it would be best to study the situation before he made his plan. Slowly, Ferguson crept up to Mortimer’s mouse hole and peered inside.

He was very surprised at what he saw! Inside the mouse hole was the portal to a very large mouse world. There were mice EVERYWHERE. Ferguson was very confused because the wall was not very big, yet when he peered inside it was gigantic!!! Ferguson did not know what to do, but he wanted to find a way to get into that mouse world.

Ferguson backed away from the mouse hole and thought “I should find a way to turn all these mice into my friends. I think I’ll create a mouse circus and travel the world with them.” Then he had more thoughts. Were there any cats in that mouse world? What were all those mice like? What would happen if the portal closed?
What should he do?

Carefully he inched back to the mouse hole. “If I could make myself invisible I could go into the mouse world and find out what it’s all about. But if I’m discovered, the mice might think I’m out to get them.” Then he remembered his Halloween costume when his people dressed his up like a big mouse. “I wonder if this will fool those mice.”

So Ferguson went to find the mouse costume and put it on! Now, he had to figure out a way to get through the hole into Mortimer’s world and not be discovered. He wondered how he could shrink himself down to size to fit through the mouse hole. He could squeeze into some pretty tight spots, but the mouse hole was very, very small. He wondered if there was some sort of magic that could take him through…Maybe a portal?

He decided to check on Google to see if there was a good way to shrink a cat, and there was! He had to run to CVS to get the magic pills. He swallowed one and quietly waited by the little mouse hole.

Ferguson began to feel very sleepy. He fell asleep and when he awoke, he found himself standing next to the mouse hole, except the mouse hole was taller than he was! ”Great!” he said to himself. “Those magic pills worked and made me smaller!” Ferguson walked towards the mouse hole and entered into Mortimer’s house.

Mortimer’s house was very grand. The first room was the kitchen and on the table was set some cheese and crackers. Ferguson decided to try a piece of cheese. After all, Mortimer shouldn’t be upset if another mouse tried it.

Just as Ferguson put the cheese in his mouth, Mortimer walked in and said “Well hello, strange mouse! What’s your name”?

Ferguson replied, “Um, I’m Fred – Fred, from far away”.

Mortimer said “Welcome Fred, did Ferguson give you any trouble?”

And Ferguson, disguised as Fred, said “errrr, no. He was fast asleep and snoring loudly. I guessed he would not have noticed that I walked by him.”

“Oh! That’s great!” Mortimer exclaimed. “Since you are here and it’s getting dark out there, would you like to take a walk into town with me? We mice are having a celebration with dancing and music and food and fireworks!

Ferguson was astounded! His disguise had worked and he was going to get to explore the mouse world he saw when he looked into the hole! Then he remembered he must be back outside the mouse hole by midnight when the pills wore off. Off they went to the party in town. There were lots of mice, and they were all singing and dancing and having a great time!

“Come with me”, said Mortimer. “Let’s get ourselves a drink and join in the fun.” With that a young attractive lady mouse came over carrying two glasses containing what looked surprisingly like niptinis. “Hello” she said to Ferguson. “I don’t remember seeing you around before. Would you care to join me for a drink?”

“Why thank you” said Ferguson, as he took a glass from her and drank deeply from it. A warm, fuzzy feeling swept through his body as he drank the sweet flavored liquid. “Hmmm. This tastes very nice”, Ferguson thought. “Maybe another small one wouldn’t hurt”. He reached for another glass and drank it down, too!

“I am Stella”, said the pretty mouse. Would you like to dance?”

“Yes”, said, Fred/Ferguson. So they danced and they danced.

Ferguson was having such fun that he didn’t realize that it was getting close to midnight. All of a sudden he felt himself getting larger. “Oh, noes!” The walls were closing in around him. Ferguson started to panic.

“Don’t worry!” Little Stella comforted him. “I know just what to do!”

She jumped on Ferguson’s back and whispered directions in his ears as he raced to the little mouse door, which was looking smaller and smaller. Would they make it? Ferguson wasn’t sure. Ferguson ran so fast, his feet were sliding every which way as he approached the small hole and he slid right through it!

“Whew, that was way too close, wasn’t it, Stella? Stella? Where are you?”

Just then Mortimer came through the now, tiny hole and asked Ferguson what was wrong. Ferguson, looking very confused, saw a beautiful Persian cat sitting beside him. “Hello, Ferguson” said Stella. I see you have eaten the magic pills to spy on the mouse world also. You wouldn’t believe what I found out about Mortimer and his friends.”

Ferguson stood absolutely still. Despite the excitement of entering the mouse world, as soon as he saw Stella, the beautiful Persian, his heart jumped into his throat.

He could hardly whisper, as he gazed into her mystical green eyes.

“Wha, what did you find out?” asked Ferguson as he stared at Mortimer Mouse, who was sitting on his hind legs looking rather pleased with himself.

“I found out that in many ways, mice are just like us! They have families and friends, they get hungry and need shelter, and they get afraid and need to be comforted” said Stella. “My dear friend Mortimer and I have been trying to figure out a way to get you to stop hunting him so we could explain this all to you. Luckily for us, you’re quite a clever cat and figured most of it out on your own! Once I’d seen that you’d gotten your paws on the shrinking pills, I took some, too. Then I donned my mouse costume and made it a point to find you once you were at the downtown party, just in case I miscalculated when they might wear off! I knew you’d need to get out quickly.”

Ferguson stood and extended his paw towards Mortimer and said “I am very pleased to meet you, Mortimer. I hope that from now on we can be friends.”

Mortimer shook one of Ferguson’s clawrs and said “The pleasure is all mine, my dear friend.”

We hope that you will join us once again next Tuesday when together we will write another wonderful story! Next week we’re going to be adding something new to The Story Game! We are going to choose one of the shelter kitties that are up for adoption to star in our Story! Mom will even try to Doodle him or her! We are going to start by choosing one from Cat’s Exclusive, a no-kill shelter for cats only, where Daisy’s Mommie volunteers. There are so many beautiful kitties that need forever homes, so it will be very, very hard to choose just one to Star for next week’s Story!

We hope to raise awareness of this wonderful organization as well as the many others like it all across the country, to encourage people to adopt from shelters and to promote neutering your pets!

Here’s this month’s Cat’s Exclusive’s Cat of the Month!

Meet one of our newest and most charming residents. Alfie was a homeless cat found wandering the streets before he came to Cats Exclusive. He is a two to three year old brown tabby with the classic full, round face and muscular body of a tom cat. Alfie has since been neutered and is now learning to enjoy a comfortable and happy life as an inside cat. Alfie enjoys attention, and is quite vocal when he has something important to say. The biggest thing on his mind right now is when he will find a Forever home. If you adopt Alfie within the next month, this beautiful custom-made leather and crystal collar from HOTCOOLDOGCATis yours to keep.

Come see if Alfie is the cat for you!

Isn’t Alfie a gorgeous Mancat? He reminds us a little of our friend Cecil the Cougar! We think Alfie is perfect for our first featured shelter kitty because we are asking him “What’s it all about, Alfie?” We sure hope Alfie finds a forever home soon!
