Princess Mercy and Figgy must cure the sadness in the Kingdom of Happiness

Princess Mercy and Figgy must cure the sadness in the Kingdom of Happiness

Princess Mercy was one of the happiest girls who had ever lived. She had yellow hair which she usually wore in pig tails. She wore cut off blue jeans and tee shirts. Mercy loved to run barefoot in the grass! She was not a prissy Princess by any measure!

Princess Mercy’s father and mother, King Kindness and Queen Hopealot, had been the rulers in the land of Happiness for many, many years. All who lived in the Kingdom of Happiness lived quite simply in thatched roof cottages on shady lanes. They worked on their farms and in their gardens because they all enjoyed working with their hands and helping their neighbors. They always seemed to have all the happiness their hearts could hold.

Now it happened that on the day of Princess Mercy’s ninth Birthday, the King gave Mercy a very special gift! He presented his lovely daughter with the gift of friendship in form of an enchanted cat named Figgy. Figgy’s one enchantment was that she could speak to all creatures. This meant that there was no creature that Mercy couldn’t speak to, so long as Figgy was with her! Since Mercy and Figgy were best friends, of course they were always together!

One lovely day Mercy and Figgy were exploring a meadow of Buttercups and came upon a cute little pond. It was full of lily pads and surrounded by trees, lush plants and many beautiful flowers. Mercy thought that this would be the perfect spot to stop and have their lunch. Just as she began to unpack her basket a warm breeze began to blow and she thought she heard something.

“Croak, Croak!

“Figgy, did you hear that?”

“Yes, Mercy. He is a fine fellow, a frog in fact! See him sitting over there on that lily pad?”

“He says ‘hello’, and that his name is Sapphire, The Meezer King. He says he killed and ate a bird he caught in a witch’s tree. Some evil magic turned him into a frog and he’s been searching for help! What do you want to do?”

“Well, we have to help him of course!” said Mercy. “What sort of help does he need?”

Figgy talked with Sapphire and then reported back to Mercy. “Sapphire must prove to the witch that he is sorry he ate the bird, but he is not sure how to go about showing her. Do you have any ideas Mercy?”

Mercy thought long and hard. She thought about asking Sapphire to jump over all the toadstools in the forest as a penance. But it would probably just bore the witch to watch all of this. She thought of asking the frog to sing all day long for the witch as a present. But she realized that frogs don’t sing so well.

Then she had a brainwave. Maybe Sapphire should have to climb a tree and sing about how sorry he is for eating the bird.

Then Mercy thought No, the witch would not release Sapphire from the spell that easily. Um, what to do?

“Well, Sapphire, this is a real quandary!

The only idea Mercy could think of that might actually help was to go to speak with King Kindness and Queen Hopealot. They ruled over all of subjects in the Kingdom of Happiness – even the witch! Mercy was quite certain her father, the King would know what to do!

Sapphire was overcome with gratitude for Mercy and Figgy’s help and vowed once he was transformed back into his own form he would find someway to thank them. Off they all rushed off to follow Mercy’s suggestion.

Sapphire hopped as quickly as he could to the castle. Yet before they could get near the castle door, he saw that the castle had a moat where a very mean looking alligator lived! Sapphire thought to himself But how could this be? We are in the Kingdom of Happiness! There shouldn’t be a mean looking alligator at all. Is this more work of the witch?

Now Sapphire was even more scared than before!

As Sapphire approached the alligator he said “Hello, Mr. Alligator. I am on an important mission to visit King Kindness and Queen Hopealot. I must see them right away! To get to them, I must swim through this moat. You will not eat me all up will you?

Mr. Alligator eyed Sapphire greedily. With a sly grin, he said “Of course I won’t eat you. Mr. Alligator’s evil laugh made Sapphire think twice and look for another way across the moat. Could he hop on the alligator’s head?

Sapphire sat there for a moment. “Mr. Alligator, if you would help me across I will tell King Kindness of your good deed.”

Mr. Alligator thought for a moment. Hmmm. A good morsel of food or a good deed to undo my mischief done years ago?

Mr. Alligator swam closer to Sapphire. “Come here frog, I will help you across the moat and let you pass if you will put a good word in for me, and maybe help me with the witch, too. You see, I, too, am bewitched. I was once a young boy, the Princess’s age, when I foolishly offended the witch, and she turned me into a guard alligator. So if I let you pass, will you help me too?”

Of course Sapphire agreed, sympathetic with Mr. Alligator’s need. Sapphire came closer to Mr. Alligator, even though he was quite afraid of the pointy teeth. He closed his eyes and he hopped onto Mr. Alligator’s back. Mercy and Figgy jumped on Mr. Alligator’s back and across the moat they went.

While Mr. Alligator helped them across, he told them that the witch was very sad, despite living in the Kingdom of Happiness, and that maybe if Sapphire could make the witch happy then she might reverse her curses.

Sapphire took this news and headed in to the Castle to find the King and Queen.

Once inside the Castle of the Kingdom of Happiness Sapphire, Mercy and Figgy stopped by a garden of beautiful flowers. Sapphire thought Maybe a nice bouquet of flowers will make the witch happy and she’ll be more willing to reverse the curse on me. So Sapphire hopped over to the garden and began picking some daisies. When all of a sudden, he heard a booming voice “What are you doing to my flowers?”

Sapphire turned around and saw the witch! She had been tending to the Rose Garden and neither Sapphire, Mercy or Figgy had seen her. The witch glared at Sapphire, then placed her pruning shears down on a nearby potting table. She took off her gardening gloves and and spoke in a tone that made Sapphire all the more nervous.

“Sapphire, you still have little regard for other living things. When you harmed one of my birds, I turned you into a frog. Now you have harmed my daisies. What must I do with you now?”

Sapphire was quite confused! “Your birds? Your daisies? But, you are the witch! Mr. Alligator just told me that he used to be a boy. What did he do to offend you so much that you turned him into an alligator?”

The witch replied “He was hurting my birds and my beautiful flowers! I saw him – and you! – harming my beautiful creatures. So, I transformed you into creatures no one would want to even talk to. Now, I see that it has not worked. I must think of something else.”

The witch became quiet, and Sapphire was terrified. What would she do to him now?

“Oh, please,” said Sapphire,” I meant no harm. I saw the pretty flowers and thought I might make amends by picking a bunch for you. I didn’t know they were already yours! I thought they were wild. If you must punish me further though, then you must do as you think fit, but please have pity on Mr. Alligator. He brought me across the moat when he could easily have eaten me.”

“Hmm.” said the witch. “There may be hope for both of you yet.”

Oh, please Kind Witch, turn him back into The Meezer King” said Mercy! “He has learned his lesson! Mr. Alligator chose to help Sapphire instead of eating him so you should turn him back into a boy, too!

Figgy purred and purred around the witch’s legs! The witch picked Figgy up and stroked her fur! And then a miracle started happening! The witch did not believe it would ever happen! She was feeling compassion! She was sure these feelings were dead to her, it had been so long! Natural enemies were being kind and offering to help one another! When faced with her wrath, Sapphire the frog still pleaded for Mr. Alligator rather than for himself! Even the cat, Figgy, liked her!

She began to feel quite different. She began to look quite different! Her hair turned from scraggly to shiny. Her nose lost its pointy tip and wart. Suddenly, a lovely young woman stood before them!

“Oh, my!” a voice gasped from behind them. Princess Mercy, Figgy, Sapphire and the now pretty witch all turned to see King Kindness and Queen Hopealot standing there. They both had tears in their eyes!

Queen Hopealot rushed towards the witch and gave her a very long embrace! “My dear sister, Faith! You have returned to me at last!”

“Mother! Do you mean that the witch is my Aunt?” asked Mercy.

“Yes, my dear daughter. You see, many years ago Faith was to be married to a King in another land, far from the Kingdom of Happiness. As it turned out, he was not very kind at all and he broke Faith’s heart. He had her turned into a witch and banished her from his kingdom. When she returned here, we put her in charge of all the small creatures and flowers in the Kingdom of Happiness. It was Faith who gave dear Figgy the ability to speak to all creatures! All these many years, as hard as we tried, we did not know how to break the spell. How wonderful that a simple act of selflessness would unbreak her heart!”

They looked down to see a beautiful Meezer rubbing against Faith’s legs! He meezed and merfed and purred very loudly! The spell on Sapphire was broken!

Just then a young brown-headed boy ran over and he was grinning from ear to ear! “Look! I am no longer Mr. Alligator! I am a boy again! I am very happy to see that you are no longer a frog, Sapphire! Thank you! I am forever grateful!”

“At last! There is no trace of sadness left in the Kingdom of Happiness, Mercy!” said Figgy.

“Figgy! Thank goodness, I can still understand you!” said Mercy.

“Of course, Mercy. That spell was cast by love! It can never be broken!”
